How Your Medical Records and Bills Reach Your Attorney
You sign first
A medical office needs your written authorization before it releases your records to anyone else. You can ask to see what you are signing and keep a copy.
Each office keeps its own records
If you saw a chiropractor, a physical therapist and an imaging center, there are three sets of records and three sets of bills. Each has to be requested.
Why a complete file matters
An attorney works from what is in the file. A missing imaging report or an unlisted provider leaves a gap.
What you can do
Keep a list of every office you visited and the dates. Share it with your attorney and with whoever is requesting records for you.
Common questions
Can my records be sent without my permission?
Release to your attorney requires your written authorization.
Can I get my own copy?
Yes. Ask each office how to request copies.
